Barely a week from now, all Filipinos will be excercising one of their rights, one of those which we have reclaimed since our independence: to choose your public servants. TO VOTE.
There are still areas in the world which do not allow their citizens to freely excercise this right, or if they do, only allow the men. We as Filipinos have had this right for a century, suspended only by World War II and the imposition of Martial Law. We are among the first in Asia to be casting votes without gender bias.
I wish for all the eligible young Filipinos to make use of May 14, from 7am to 3 pm, to make their choice and let their voices be heard. More than that, I urge you to be responsible voters and citizens by being vigilant, attentive and helpful.
- Although it is not necessary, it is recommended that you bring some form of identification with you when you go to your respective precints.
- Go to the polls early and avoid the closing rush, avoid confusion among voters and avoid arguments with volunteers.
- You should have received your Voters' Information Sheet (VIS) that contains all necessary information about your precint; however, bringing it with you on election day is not necessary but may be helpful.
- If you know your precinct, proceed there directly.
- Keep in mind that our Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) are there to help and have a very long day ahead of them. Identify yourself to the BEI so they can confirm your name on the list. Observe courtesy at all times to the BEI, your fellow voters and other volunteers.
- The voting stations will have the list of all candidtes posted; take your time to read through it or call the attention of the BEI if there is none posted at the station.
- Follow all instructions on the ballot and fill out all necessary spaces.
- Do not deface or write anything else that is not asked for; do not put any unnecessary marks in other parts of the ballot, or else your vote may not be counted.
- Wait for your turn at the precinct.
- Voting is not done under time pressure, so read carefully, choose wisely.
- When you are satisfied with your cast, fold the ballot and hand it to the Chairman of the BEI at the precinct.
- After doing so, have your finger stained with indelible ink.
- The Chairman of the BEI will return your ballot for you to drop into the ballot box.
- Unless absolutely necessary, avoing lingering at the precinct so that the voting excercise of others in line will not be hampered.
- You don’t have to show anyone how you voted.
Help keep the peace and be a responsible voter. I hope to see you all on Election Day.
